Deadline for UN Note extended
President Mahinda Rajapaksa appointed a special team of legal experts and given them four more months to study a US State Department report cataloging alleged war crimes in the island. He also referred the letter by Philip Alston, the UN Special Rapporteur on Extra- judicial, Summary and Arbitrary Executions, seeking explanation from the government on the charges made and subsequently withdrawn by the former Army Chief Sarath Fonseka against Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, and Maj. Gen. Shavinrda Silva.
The special team is to study both documents as well as to analyze them and report to the President.
