Israel style PM post for Sri Lanka PDF Print E-mail
According to a senior govt spokesman a study is being conducted by the govt already to create an executive prime minister post in Sri Lanka in the model practiced in Israel in a way that would suit Sri Lanka and a top govt team is already studying the Israel model and the Israel constitution thoroughly for this purpose.

These sources also said that this would be a mix of the executive presidency in practice here after the 1978 and the Westminster Model prime minister post that was here before 1978. Though there will be no limit on terms of the executive prime minister, he would have to attend the Parliament and answer the questions of MPs.

The govt information sources stated that even though the Constitutional amendment to create an executive prime minister post in the country may take place in the near future, this position will be created at the end of the 2nd term of the President. These sources added that either a Parliamentary Select committee or an Inter-Party committee will be created to determine the powers of this new position. It also added that the President, who came to power through a public mandate for the 2nd term and will remain in this position until the end of his tenure and then select the Executive Prime Minister through a fresh vote.
