He is suspected of being involved in the murder of fellow university student. Police officers in civvies are conducting investigations and the IGP has asked Basnayake to go to the nearest police station and give a statement.

But JVP MP Anura Kuamara Dissanayake stated that it is the police that killed the student at the Ruhunu University and the IGP, who contradicted his own statements in this regard, should resign forthwith.

The Student Union of the Ruhunu University says that the government and the Police are attempting to blame students for the death of the student of the Ruhunu University Susantha Bandara who it says died in hospital after being attacked by the Police. The Secretary of the Association Duminda Tharaka says that the Police are making use of statements made by mislead parents to cover their nakedness.
