Four journalists are powerful than 1,000 bayonets’ PDF Print E-mail
Addressing the media personnel at a dinner, he hosted for them at the Taj Samudra Colombo General (Retd) Sarath Fonseka said on Monday night, that if elected President, he would move for a Parliamentary Act to ensure the security and safety of journalists.

Fonseka said "A government headed by me, will ensure that the media is free to function without being hounded and killed."

Presidentcial candidate further said "On that basis the media assembled before me today, can be equated to 200,000 bayonets." Taking an quoting fromNapoleon Bonarparte of France, he said that four journalists were equal to a 1,000 bayonets.

The government, he said, was trying to tarnish his image, by linking him with the killing of "a journalist," but he had no connection with that incident. "If it was true, why was action not taken when I was in the army? It was certain persons in government, who kept labelling media personnel who did not work to their agenda, as traitors.
He said “It is they, who should be questioned with regard to the killings."

Fonseka said . "If elected President, I will ensure that not only are salaries of journalists increased, but their housing needs are also met
