President unveils monument for fallen war heroes PDF Print E-mail
President Mahinda Rajapaksha visited the northern province of Sri Lanka for the ceremonial opening of the war memorial in tribute to all valiant soldiers who dedicated their lives in the three decade war which ended on May this year. He also visited the physically handicapped soldiers while visiting the Vavniya situated Manik Farm temporary Refugee Camp.

President Rajapaksha touring in Manik Farm refugee camp yesterday was seen exchanging conversation with the Internally Displaced persons when he inquired of their stay in the refugees camps. As state media reports, president Rajapaksha had received a positive reply regarding facilities and accommodations offered to them by the Government. Meanwhile the president had also promised to resettle the IDPs in their home grounds before 31st of January next year. Furthermore the sum of 25,000 Rs offered as consolation money for the IDPs had been doubled over to 50,000 Rupees.

The war memorial which was declared open by President Mahinda Rajapaksha has been built in Nandicadal Lagoon in Puthukuduyiruppu to commemorate the final battle fought between the SL forces and the LTTE before victory was reinstated.

“When mahinda Chinthana was implemented and I pledged my vows to free our contry from the clutches of terrorism, I knew the hardships the defense forces will have to undergo to fulfill that task.” President said.

 “The gallant actions of all war heroes will stand with pride and honor on this historical monument as the whole nation’s gratitude for their invaluable, dauntless and heroic services are esteemed with the bottom of our hearts. Without you this journey would have been impossible a task to achieve. The whole Island is indebted to you” President Rajapaksha said in his speech at the unveiling of the war monument

Secretary to the President Lalith Weerathunge, Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, Chief of Defence Staff and Air Force Commander Air Chief Marshal Roshan Goonethilake, Army Commander Lt. General Jagath Jayasuriya, Navy Commander Rear Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe, Inspector General of Police Mahinda Balasuriya, and several war heroes were also present at the event.
