Opposition request permission to campaign in North PDF Print E-mail
On Tuesday main opposition parties UNP and JVP requested the allowance to campaign in the Northern Province at the up coming election polls. Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Parliamentarian from JVP alleged that only the Government politicians are allowed to campaign in the war forsaken area of the North.
“It is very unfair for the opposition during an election campaign” Dissanayaka told the reporters. "We urge the government to allow us to do our politics in the Northern Province as it has been liberated from the control of the LTTE terrorists after 30 years. But the government continuously avoids our request. Only the ruling party runs their campaign there," he further said.

Jayalath Jayawardena, a legislator from the main opposition United National Party also asked the government to permit his party to campaign in the north.

Both JVP and UNP support the former Chief of Defense General Sarath Fonseka who will be the main opposing candidate against the incumbent president Mahinda Rajapaksha.
