Continuing assaults of opposition pocket meetings PDF Print E-mail
A series of attacks have been reported over opposition conventions held during the past week. Amidst a mass of events of thuggery relished on opposition meetings, UNP and JVP supporters have witnessed assaults of the similar kind from a number of different sets of goons. Their main ambition had been to wreak havoc at the party conventions.

On the 20th ( Friday) this week, a JVP pocket meeting held at Kiribathgoda underwent an assault from an unknown group of thugs.  JVP Group Leader of the Western Provincial Council Waruna Deepatha Rajapaksa reported that the meeting had been attacked twice during the same day.

Apart from destroying all decorations and assaulting the supporters who were involved in the arrangements earlier on the day, the thugs had returned while the meeting was in process, destroyed the furniture and assaulted those who were gathered at the venue. The attackers had used wooden poles and glass bottles and in one case even a T 56 rifle which resulted in three people being hospitalized for immediate treatment.

Mr. Rajpaksa alleged that the attackers were supporters of Minister Mervin Silva and his ardent sidekicks, mainly Chairman and the Deputy Chairman of the Kelaniya Pradeshiya Sabha.

A similar attack over the UNP Colombo North electoral meeting on Saturday the 21st,was directly targeted at Colombo North organizer for UNP; parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake. A group of yowling and hooting youths had entered the premises of the meeting and had continued to assault the people gathered there while a few even threw stones at the political figures upon the stage.

“Number of police officers and police vehicles were nearby the location of the meeting but none of the policemen intervened to stop the thugs from attacking the participants at the meeting” an eye witness at the commotion explained.

A spokesman for the UNP said the attack had been carried out by thugs of former UNP organizer for Colombo North and present UPFA Member of the Western PC Duminda Silva.

Mr. Silva had point blankly refuted the claims branding them as untrue allegations to tarnish his reputation.

Four casualties were reported including a Member of Colombo Municipal Council Whom was admitted to hospital with injuries sustained at the attack. However Ravi Karunanayaka and his wife were quickly escorted away to a safe location by the supporters of the party.

Denying the accusations of the police ignoring the incidents, Police Media spokesman I M. Karunaratne said they were carrying out investigations on received complaints.
