Gen. SF relieved of his duties with immediate effect PDF Print E-mail
Receiving the letter of resignation by Gen. Fonseka, President Mahinda Rajapaksa has ordered that Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Sarath Fonseka be relieved from his duties with immediate effect in spite of General’s request to let him continue in that post until Dec. 01, 2009.

Accordingly Gen. Fonseka's resignation letter submitted to the President through the Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunge on Thursday took effect yesterday itself.

By doing so the President has kept to his promise that he will not hinder anyone’s fundamental rights.
Gen. Fonseka informed the President of his desire to resign at a one-to-one meeting on Wednesday. The expected ironing out of differences at this meeting did not come in to fructify but the meeting had been friendly and cordial.

It is reported that first Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa and wife of the CDS, Anoma Fonseka has spoken to each other on the phone on the matter prior to their husbands' meeting.

Although it is been widely reported in the media that President Rajapakse has accepted the resignation with immediate effect, the General has not yet received the formal responding letter from the president.

Gen. Fonseka, had refrained supporting all speculations that he would be running for the presidency of the country until Thursday on the grounds that he was an officer still in uniform serving the government.
