“I am retiring that’s all I can say” – Gen. Sarath Fonseka PDF Print E-mail
It is been reported that Chief of Defense Staff Gen.Sarath  Fonseka has resigned from his post.
General Sarath Fonseka had sent his letter of resignation to the President through the Defence Secretary today (12th). The letter sent to the President has also been copied to the President’s Secretary. The President had informed the General that he would accept his resignation letter if it is handed over to him and had ensured that the government would take all necessary steps ensure further his security.

The General Sarath Fonseka joined the Sri Lanka Army on February 5, 1970. He was commissioned in the force on June 1, 1970 and was appointed the 18th Commander of the Sri Lanka Army on December 6, 2005.

He was promoted as General after his decisive role in militarily countering the Tigers within 3 years and 7 months after becoming the Army commander.

Three months after the military won the fight against the LTTE, Fonseka was appointed as the Chief of Defence Staff.

Politicians from the newly formed UNF alliance say that his resignation as army chief is to stand as a presidential candidate.

But in an interview with BBC Sinhala, Gen Fonseka said I am retiring that’s all I can say for the moment”. He did not draw any attention on media reports he might enter the presidential race.

It is reported that President Mahinda Rajapakse has accepted General’s resignation.
