Transnational Government: another myth is being nurtured! PDF Print E-mail
The Tamil Diaspora is of three main categories. The first one is the post-independent pre-1983 overseas settlers who searched new pastures for themselves and their motivations were purely economic and colonial-cultured lives. Usually they went for higher education and many of them opted to stay back and establish their lives there, England virtually being that destination. They shared this with their Sinhala counterparts.

Some however returned home to the Colombo elite surrounds as doctors, engineers, lawyers and mercantile executives and a few of them took to politics. Nearly all of them were certainly weaned out of their traditional backgrounds in Sri Lanka, and Colombo’s ex-colonial habitations like Cinnamon Gardens became their residential pride.

The non-professional children of the landed rich, some educationally semi-baked took to the tea and rubber plantations and their unique lifestyles. Life was simply paradise on earth for the denizens of Colombo 7 and the hill stations. The renowned journalist Tarzie Vitachi called them quite appropriately, the Brown Sahibs; only their skins were brown and shades of gray.

The second group is mostly the post-1983 émigrés who took advantage of the doors opened to a flood of them following the 1983 racial riots which was intentioned as genocide against the Tamils by the Government of Junius Jayawardene. In this genocidal intention, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) had a contributory role, sparking it off with the Tinnevely ambush. It is also known that both the LTTE and the Sri Lankan Armed Forces personnel had military training in Israel financed by the Jayawardene Government.

Only President Jayawardene had genocidal intentions

In the annals of Sri Lankan history, it is only the Jayawardene Government that wanted Tamils wiped out of Sri Lanka. Ironically, it is the UNP to which Jayawardene belonged the Tamils supported rejecting the LSSP, the Communist Party and the SLFP at all times, class being the underlining factor. It is the UNP that disfranchised the hill country Tamils supported by G G Ponnambalam’s Tamil Congress.

Most of the second group of Tamils was English-stream educated, in good professional standing and very soon they became well established in the countries to which they fled mostly the United Kingdom and Canada. However, hardly any of them were lettered in civics, government and social sciences since the craze of the Tamils was to become doctors and engineers. In other words, these émigrés were ill-lettered in political sciences. They were only familiar with colonial goodies that served them well and hardly entertained the pride of their Sri Lankaness. So much so they even prefer to be identified by Sri Lanka’s colonial name of Ceylon and not in the traditional Lanka heritage.

The third group is the Tamil Only class that saw a chance to seek overseas pastures. While many of them went to Canada and the United Kingdom, large concentrations of them went to France, Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway and even Italy attracted by factory and menial jobs even though they hardly spoke the languages of these states. It was also easier for the LTTE alien smugglers to steal them into these countries.

It was among the third group, the LTTE began to sow its vicious seeds and give them an identity of pride, power and prominence. The process was quite fast because that is the only identity that was available to them in strange lands and with lifestyles quite unfamiliar to them. It was virtually a ghetto culture that grew dominated only by LTTE ideals focused on an Eelam State to which none of them or hardly any of them were going to return. The evolution of a violent culture was quite marked among them.

LTTE’s violent, intolerant and extortionist characteristics became fostered on this group and their power became so marked, the second group of Tamils saw in them the opportunity to develop their power attracted also by the remarkable progress the LTTE was making in Sri Lanka. Many of the third group owe their being able to seek refuge in the west to LTTE’s fast developing underworld of alien smuggling and the network it had established in many parts of the world.

The second group also had a score to settle with the Sinhalese because of the 1983 racial riots and in this they saw the third group as their hit men. But having been unlettered in civics, government and social sciences, they were hardly alive to the venomous snake, Tiger Terrorism that they were feeding with their support. This predilection also affected to a great extent their integration in the national ethos of their new homelands. They were more focused in nurturing practices and customs that they thought were traditional to them and became snugly ensconced in them.

Prodded by smart Alexes of the society, some of them utter scoundrels and known criminals in Sri Lanka, they developed the Myth of Eelam dream and money collectors were soon on the streets claiming to collect funds for the final war in Sri Lanka to establish Eelam. Wherever they failed, they resorted to threats of evil consequences either to them or their kith and kin in Sri Lanka or both. The money collectors live a life of luxury and in Canada they are called the Markham Millionaires; in Paris, the Swiss Swindlers and in Oslo, the Opulent Opportunists and Erik Solheim their guardian angel.

Over a period of two decades this Eelam Dream has created a global underworld of arms running, drugs, money laundering and numerous other evil and illegal activities and in the process nurtured and sustained the world’s most brutal and ruthless terror organization of which these people were obviously proud.

Today the terror plague has been neutralized in Sri Lanka and the LTTE needs a new frontier or façade for its underworld operations. And who better to create one other than the Interpol wanted Selvarasa Pathmanathan now recognized as the man Prabhakaran wanted as the LTTE leader?

This is the man with several names for each of his many passports, his actual residence is not known but is believed to have inherited a massive fortune, the LTTE largesse. In order to keep the Myth of Eelam going to sustain the LTTE underworld and the massive potential of collecting funds from the Tamil Diaspora hardly any of them lettered in civics, government and social sciences, this group obviously advised by the attorney Rudrakumaran Vishwanathan in the States have come out with the idea of Provisional Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam and one can be sure many of the Tamil Diaspora will go hook, line and sinker for it without even a second glance at one of the weirdest political ideology ever hatched in human history.

Sadly this is the time the Tamil Diaspora can become an important pressure group to facilitate that their Tamil brethren in Sri Lanka are helped to achieve their political rights especially since there is a massive goodwill among the Sinhalese to solve the ethnic problem in all fairness and justice to the minorities. The communal chapter of Ponnambalam, the regional peculiarity of Chelvanagayam and the Eelam terrorism of Prabhakaran with each succeeding worse than the previous one are now over.

Now the Tamils have to look for a national identity where every citizen of Sri Lanka will, enjoy equal rights. The efforts of Pathmanathan, Rudrakumaran and others to further develop the identity of the Tamils as the global paraiyas of terrorism must be stopped forthwith.

Provisional Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam! Isn’t there an end of a lesson for the Tamils.
