MR unaware of Indian prisoners PDF Print E-mail
MPs from Tamil Nadu who visited Colombo recently said that President Rajapaksa was unaware of Indian prisoners in Sri Lankan jails.

They have raised this matter when they met him.

T. K. S. Elangovan from the DMK party said "The President and Basil Rajapaksa do not seem to have got any communication from India about the prisoners. They even didn't know about the issue till we raised it, there are around 40 Indian prisoners in Sri Lankan Jails".

But according to the Indian High Commission spokesman in Colombo Dinkar Asthana A draft treaty on the transfer of sentenced prisoners between India and Sri Lanka is in the advanced stages of negotiations and is expected to be finalized shortly.

The Spokesmen said the draft treaty will facilitate the return of sentenced prisoners of the two countries back to their home country for serving the reminder of their sentences.
