Ranil gives a verbal reply to LLRC
According to UNP leader Ranil Wickramasinghe, he has given a verbal reply to the secretary of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission on testifying before it. He also said the following.
“I verbally told the secretary of the LLRC that traditionally those who
held the positions of Prime Minister and the opposition leader are
responsible only to the Parliament and if any testifying is to be done
on such persons outside the Parliament the chairman of the LLRC should
issue the notification and it cannot be done through the secretary. I am
responsible only to the Parliament as the former Prime Minister with
regarded to the Cease fire agreement and this is situation of our
constitution as well. Also it must be clearly known whether the UN
Expert Panel will appear in front of the LLRC. So I cannot appear in
front of the commission without these clarifications, especially when
there is also the rumor that the LLRC is being used to tarnish the image
of the opposition. Since I have given a verbal reply in this regard
there is no possibility to take any further step in this regard”.
