The ministry of local govt and provincial councils has asked the election commissioner to suggest necessary amendments to the Local govt special provisions act and Local govt elections act.
Accordingly the election commissioner’s dept says that they are planning
to table some amendment proposals to these acts over certain issues
including the boundary demarcation of election wards.
The last time an election was held on the ward basis was in 1988 and
they plan to study the issue again and make their suggestions in the
coming week. The advisory committee of the Ministry is scheduled to meet
on the 24th instant to discuss these proposals where they are to reach a
final decision as well. The opposition has said that these two bills
should be taken up for discussion in January next year but the govt has
insisted at the party leaders meeting that it should be taken up in
December itself. Finally the UNP has agreed to take up for discussion on
the 13th of December after end of the budget debate.
