Human Rights complaints pile up PDF Print E-mail
It is reported that thousand who lodged complaints at the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission expecting fair recommendations are badly disillusioned because for the last two years the Human Rights council have been inactive.

It is further reported that due to non-appointment of members to the commission only basic investigations are being conducted on complaints received and in many instances the recommendations regarding the complaints are also being made by the same investigative official where the complainant is in serious difficulty as these officials make these recommendations according to their own whim and fancy.

When contacted the director general of the commission said that only in emergency issues such as irregularities in admitting children to schools recommendations are issued by the investigating officials. She also said that the commission gets about 300 complaints every month and preliminary inquiries are completed inmost of them and the relevant documents are filed, but she cannot say anything about appointing members to the commission.
