[Colombo lawyer attempts a mischievous racial smear claiming he was arrested by the Sinhala police for helping the Tamils].

The story that appeared in the Sri Lanka Guardian stating that the Sinhala police arrested a Tamil priest for helping his people and picked up by some websites has no foundation whatsoever. It was written with mischievous intent by a Colombo lawyer using a female pseudonym to cover up the real horror behind his arrest.

The priest referred to here is the Rev Sellathurai Jeyanesan who caused a great deal of problems for the Jaffna Diocese of the Church of South India (JDCSI) community because he could not become the bishop and has in his hands unaccounted millions collected in the name of the JDCSI for nearly two decades.

Among his fund raisers is a California attorney Eric Parkinson who heads a Jewish organization called VeAhavta. In 2003 this organization sponsored for the Rev Mr Jeyanesan, designated as a priest of the Jaffna Diocese of the Church of South India, a speaking fund-raising tour to churches and other groups in California, Indiana, Ohio, Toronto and New York.

On this tour he took two young girls claimed as orphans from Batticaloa. He said: “It is important for people living outside Sri Lanka to see that the children who are suffering are not merely statistics or photographs but real children,” and added: “If others will not come to Sri Lanka to witness the suffering of these children, then I will bring the children to them.”

One has to hook to flights of fantasy to imagine how he would have demonstrated their suffering on a tour with him in the US without even his wife accompanying them.

The Rev Mr Jeyanesan is also supported by an organization in the Netherlands called the Ceylon Christian Care. It is neither a university nor a high school but still appears to have conferred on him a doctorate for which some kind of celebration was held in Toronto where his son, siblings and their families live. He has never accounted for any of the funds raised on these and other campaigns and the support he has received and or receives to the church whose name he used for these travels.
A few years ago a colleague of his charged him on the floor of the Diocesan Council of having attempted to molest his wife. If the head of the church at that time, the Rt Rev Dr Subramaniam Jebanesan had taken the obvious action and defrocked this priest, this church would have avoided so many problems to which the Rev Jeyanesan subjected it. But there were some elements in the church that used his cover for their private gains and influence. Fortunately later events have sorted that menace out.

The Rev Jeyanesan even caused some problems in the relationship the JDCSI has with mission institutions in the US with which we have had a near-200 years of excellent relationship. A good part of the problems at the Uduvil Girls College have been caused by this man and made some unsuspecting people victims of his deceit. On one occasion using the school premises overnight where girl students live in the boarding house, he and his stooges boarded up the Uduvil Church from inside. The school is paying a terrible price because of this man’s activities.

It is very tragic this famous school which had the leadership of some great principals like Miss Lucie Bookwalter, Miss Ariam Paramasamy, Mrs Saraswathy Somasunderam and Dr Chelvi Selliah became a victim of his machinations and he had even manipulated some missionary personnel in the US in this respect.

He is also being used by forces that for a long period of time held the JDCSI captive for their own selfish clan and nepotistic interests and he capitalizes on them. He had the help of a man called Dhyan Chand Carr from Tamilnadu who was hired by Bishop Jebanesan to work at the Theological Seminary who turned vicious against the bishop and in the process began to promote the interests of Rev Jeyanesan. His drinking habit alone was a bad example to the community.

I have done enough research on this matter and have also named people who have played foul of the JDCSI and also Jaffna College both in Sri Lanka and the US. We have to take utmost care of our institutions because they are precious to us and are the inheritance of generations to come. We have to stand up for them at all times with honour, honesty, dignity, courage and wisdom and can never make light of such an awesome responsibility that is cast on us.

If for some reason or other, there are people who support this Rev Jeyanesan, let them sit back and ponder whether this is the kind of leadership you would foster on your children.

The man who authored the article in support of this priest stated that the Sinhala police arrested Rev Jeyanesan for helping his people in a disgraceful effort to cover up the horrendous reality behind it. The writer was a son of a former and much respected judge of the Supreme Court who served on the Jaffna College Board of Directors and his grand father a very much honoured proctor from Uduvil. He should have known better.

The writer also said that Bishop Daniel Thiagarajah fled Jaffna and is hiding somewhere in Colombo. Again this is not only palpably false and mischievous but an effort to discredit a head of a church who moves freely around and is readily accessible. The point here is the writer thinks the Tamil community is such a sucker, it will even believe that the cow really jumped over the moon and the dish ran away with the spoon. What a Hey Diddle Diddle! The little dog is out of its depth laughing at such a joke!
The truth is that Rev Jeyanesan was arrested on a charge of sexual misconduct, and that is the truth.
